If he were to rate President Rodrigo Duterte’s first year on office, Senate President Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel II would give him an almost perfect score.

“(On a scale of 1 to 10), from 8.5 to nine,” Pimentel said in an ambush interview during the graduation of University of the Philippines (UP) law students last Monday.

Pimentel, a party mate of Duterte, pointed out that the Filipinos have felt the “change” the President has promised when he was still campaigning.

Chocolate Hills , Bohol

Chocolate Hills Complex in Carmen is 55 km from Tagbilaran City and the most famous tourist attraction of Bohol. There are thousand cone-shaped hills spreading out on a natural open plateau, looking like mystic mounds.

They look like chocolate kisses during summer when the grasses, that cover the hills, turn into brown.

There are two areas to visit to get a good look at the hills. These are at the Chocolate Hills Complex in Carmen town, and at the Sagbayan Peak.

The biggest hill has been developed into a resort with accommodations, restaurant and gift shop. 214 steps lead to the top where an observation deck is built and the view there is simply wonderful.

Whale Watching, Oslob, Cebu

Watching of whale sharks in Oslob Cebu is 99% guaranteed. Whale sharks can be seen in a small barangay Tan-awan, which is 10 km away from the center town of Oslob. Whale shark watching in Cebu started last September 2011 and it became popular all over the world when the news hit in the internet last November 2011. By December 2011, local fishermen’s interact with the whale sharks by feeding them that result to flocking of tourist to the beach of Tan-awan. Large numbers of tourists began arriving in Oslob not just to see the whale sharks being fed but also to snorkel or dive with them.

Temple of Leah

If you believe in love, Love can move mountains. If we got love that is strong enough, we can do anything, make it through anything ‘Coz through it all love will always find a way.

I constructed this temple in the year 2012 A.D. as a symbol of my undying love for and ceaseless devotion to Leah Villa Albino-Adarna, my wife of 53 years. I adopted and architectural and structural design that can withstand time and still be appreciated for a millennium so this Temple will become a landmark of Cebu where future generations of the Adarna clan coming from her can come and trace the roots and heritage. All her lifetime collections are showcased in the 24 chambers of this Temple principally for the members of our family who cherish her memory.

This is to acknowledge the help given to me to finish this massive temple:

• Alan Modesto Adarna and Teodorico “Rico” G. adarna who share their expertise in the construction and the generosity of Alan Modesto Adarna for loaning his heavy equipments to help carve this Temple from mountain side

Osmeña Peak

Osmeña Peak is said to be one of the highest points in the island of Cebu, a province in the Philippines. Standing 1,013 meters above sea level, this stunning site offers a dramatic view of jagged cliffs with a view of the sea in the distance. Locals often liken the view to Bohol’s Chocolate Hills. But instead of rolling curved mounds, the hills here have sharp protruding peaks. Set amidst the limestone cliffs, the hills resemble a field of gigantic green Hershey’s Kisses. It’s unlike anything I’ve seen during previous hikes.

NOTE: Apparently there’s a higher mountain in Cebu. As pointed out by a reader, Mt. Manunggal in Balamban is higher at 1,097 MASL. However, most people only get to visit the campsite located at 1,003 MASL. For mainstream tourists, Osmena Peak is the most easily accessible.

Batanes Islands

MANILA, Philippines - To escape to Batanes is to escape to a different world.

Geographically, this description is not that far off. The Batanes Islands are almost as close to Taiwan as they are to Luzon with Taiwanese radio stations only a knob-turn away. Its 10 tiny islands are in common possession of craggy cliffs pummelled at the feet by angry waves, emerald hills perfectly manicured by a legion of cows, and boxy, cobblestone-walled houses topped by cogon-thatched roofs.

Underground River, Palawan

Wait, an underground river? How is that possible?

Yep, that’s right. In fact, the river flows directly underneath the St Paul Mountain Range, found on the mid-western coast of Palawan. The river channeled its way through a series of vast chambers and caverns over millions of years ago.

The cave system stretches for a total of 24km underneath the mountains, and the river itself winds its way through 8.2km of it. Besides being one of the longest underground rivers in the world, the PPUR is also one of the very few that outflows directly to the sea.

The river and caves are home to complex eco-system that has adapted to living underground here over hundreds of years. Many of the animals in the caves are found only here, including certain types of giant spiders, crabs, fish and snakes, although bats and swallows are likely to be the only ones you’ll see.
